Canoe's Story

Canoe’s mission is to free clients from the burden of manual investment data management. Development of Canoe’s proprietary technology began in 2013 by a group of sophisticated investors focused on alternative and illiquid strategies. They realized that it was difficult, costly and time consuming to manually track investments, so they decided to automate it. The idea for Canoe began within a Private Investment Firm, where they believed that there had to be a better way to manage the documents and data associated with alternative investments, and built technology to reduce manual entry.

Seth Brotman

Chief Executive Officer

Seth is responsible for building and managing the business, product development, and client service teams. Seth has seventeen years of alternative investment and FinTech experience. He started his career focused on alternative investments research and analysis working for multi-billion dollar allocators and family offices. His responsibilities included creating investment criteria, developing a robust pipeline of prospective investments, and constructing portfolios of alternative investments for institutional clients. Seth grew up in South Florida and attended University of Florida where he earned both an M.S. in Decision Information Science and a B.S. in Finance with a Minor in Economics.

Wei Wang

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Wei developed Canoe’s proprietary technology and is responsible for recruiting engineering talent and managing technology development. Originally from Inner Mongolia, Wei is a self-taught engineer with fifteen years of experience. Prior to founding Canoe, Wei spent five years creating technology that applied machine learning and various other techniques to track alternative investments for Portage Partners. Wei moved to the U.S. ten years ago to earn a MBA from Fitchburg State University and a M.S. in Operations Research from the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University.

Mike Muniz

Head of Sales

Mike is responsible for developing partnerships, expanding client relationships, and managing the sales team. Mike has nine years experience at buy-side consulting and financial technology companies. Most recently, Mike led the Sales and Account Management team for Dealogic’s Connect offering until it was acquired by ION Investment Group. Prior to Dealogic, Mike spent four years at Novus Partners running the Analytics desk and focusing on client management for institutional investors. Mike started his career at Cambridge Associates, a blue-chip consultant advising endowments, foundations, pensions, and family offices on asset allocation and manager selection. Mike graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University with a B.A. in History and Markets & Management.

Shawn Israilov

Head of Client & Product Development

Shawn is responsible for client management, product development, and overseeing the client service and product teams. Shawn has six years experience in alternative investments, financial technology and consulting. He spent three years at Novus Partners, where he led a team focused on analyzing diversified portfolios and managing relationships with multi-billion dollar institutional clients spanning endowments, foundations, pensions, large family offices and hedge funds. Prior to Novus, he founded a sports-betting consulting platform that leveraged proprietary quantitative models to provide data-driven insights to the invested NFL fan. Shawn started his career at J.P. Morgan, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bernard M. Baruch College with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance & Investments.
